The Temptations of Christ
Within the bible we can read many accounts of the life of Jesus. There are actually four whole books wholly devoted to just his life. Through these four books we get a very in depth look at his life. Yet in the books Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, we see different views and different aspects on Jesus and his teaching. Every once and a while we notice that more than one of these books have the same story in them. This is not a common occurrence within the four books of Jesus' life, but when it does happen it is important to take notice, because more than one author thought the story was important to include. There is one story within these books that I have taken time to study. Found within the books Matthew, Mark and Luke the bible accounts of Jesus being lead by the holy spirit into the wilderness. Here he spends 40 days without any food and during that time he is tempted by Satan himself. This temptation helped insure our salvation because Jesus did not fail. Of the three accounts of Jesus' temptation, the first of the three can be found in Matthew 4:1-11. Here we are told that Jesus was lead out into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit so that he could be tempted by the devil. It says that he became very hungry becaus
" Every one of the temptations tested different aspects of Jesus' character. It shows the difference in opinion and personality between authors and it still gives us the ability to see that the Bible, even though it is a divine book, was still written by men just like you or I. The next place we find the story of Jesus' temptation is in the book of Mark, chapter 1:12-13. Looking through these parallel scriptures, we see differences and similarities. If so, then it would seem that he would want it to end with the last temptation being the one where Satan tries to use scripture to tempt Jesus. Differences in how things are presented and also differences in detail, in the words and in the feeling that you get from each passage. In comparison to the book of Matthew, the story here is very brief. His temptations had the same pulls as our own temptations do but we can learn by example. They are somewhat more elegant but yet the detail of the story is not as deep in comparison to Luke. There is not much detail to be accounted , and it doesn't tell what the temptations are. The last account of the Temptation of Jesus can be found within the book of Luke. If we take time to know Gods word, we can have the tools to stick up to temptation by saying " The scriptures say. Because of his success, we can all live forever in him. As in Matthew, it stats that Jesus began to get hungry and the Devil tempted him by telling him that he should turn stone into bread, if he is the son of God. " It is possible that the writer of Luke thought it would be more dramatic to order the temptations in this way, since they are ordered differently in Matthew.
