Aspect of a Short Story
The short story "The Bowl" by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells us about one of his friends from college, Dolly Harlan, who was also his roommate. Dolly was a football player at Princeton University. At the beginning, he says he hates football and wants to quit the team, then he does quit and meet a nice woman which he loves and he doesn't really talk about football anymore but by the end of the story he chooses to join the football team again because he realize how much he loves the game. At the beginning of the story, Dolly Harlan tells how he wants to quit the team, how lucky he was when he caught the punt back at the game. He even considered leaving school: "Once committed, he saw that he had made a mistake; he even considered leaving college." But what he hadn't realized was that he was a great player and that he needed to be notified by other people to realize that. It was set in his mind that he was going to quit the team. After Dolly met Miss Thorne, his mind was focused on her and he still wanted to quit football, but Miss Thorne had lost her brother when he was playing football. Therefore, Dolly did not want to hurt her because he loved her. She had a really big influence on him: " 'He's go
'It isn't like that'" This really prove how much influence she has on him. I think that Dolly Harlan is a true man, who lives by what he really loves what made him grew up and make his personality. ing to speak a little piece if they bother him about playing football next autumn, aren't you, child?' 'Oh, they won't bother me,' said Dolly uncomfortably. The letter was not written with true meanings. Over the summer, Dolly broke his ankle and wrote a letter to Jeff. I think that this case is really interesting. And then from the stands, he moved down to the sideline with the team. " This proves that he didn't really want to quit football, his friend knew better than that. " Victory and Pride are the two key words. And again he did not ruined a relationship for a game because the way he was, came from playing football and if he wasn't playing football anymore, it was not him, the way he wanted to be, and the people knew him. I think that when he said to Miss Thorne that he loved her but he had to play, he was not ruining the relationship over a game. That same night, Jeff went to meet Dolly and Vienna and their room, Vienna said: "Sit down, Jeff, I want you to witness the collapse of a man into a schoolboy. Playing football for Dolly was his life. She was happier when it was not the real Dolly Harlan.
