Homosexuality and The Catholic Church
Homosexuality is the deepest issues dividing churches today. The issue of homosexuality provokes significant emotion in our society. Social and political developments such as homosexual marriage, homosexual adoption, homosexual clubs in the school system and alternative families have taken center stage in modern life. Although this is becoming more and more acceptable by today's generation, the church has not been bypassed. Despite many mainstream Christian, religious (1)denominations' condemnations of homosexuality, increasing numbers of gay Christians have been coming out spiritually, urging both their churches and the gay community to rethink the assumption that being a gay Christian is a contradiction. While some have turned to more liberal denominations and others have formed groups within their denomination to fight discrimination, many gay Christian's are holding fast to their religious identities. Many gays argue there's nothing inherently anti-gay in Christianity, and being anti-gay is decidedly not Christian. Sexual orientation cannot be chosen, yet still small minded people discriminate against homosexuals. The Catholic Church does not condone homosexual activity, but it also does not condemn homosexual orienta
There are many up-to-date sources of the Catholic Church's views on homosexuality, but homosexuality can be found even mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. It was the first spiritual support group for lesbian and gay Catholics. Even though homosexual orientation is not a mental illness, some therapist's believe they can still change the sexual orientation of a homosexual person to that of a heterosexual person. This helped end the idea that the homosexual orientation is a mental illness (Genovesi 449-451). Three sexual orientations are commonly recognized. Their first recognition of the need for Christian support of homosexuals was in 1969, when an organization called Dignity was begun. With the increase of education about homosexuals and the rise of support groups for them, there was evidence of an attitudinal shift in the Catholic Church by the 1970's (Blumenfeld 187-189). The personality characteristics of homophobic people can easily be identified in others that belong to another group of prejudiced people. All of God's promises are intended for every human being. The terminology generally used for male homosexuality is gay. This includes gay men and lesbians. " The Catholic Church does not (3)condemn homosexual orientation. Changing one's sexual orientation is not simply a matter of changing one's sexual behavior. The only way one can attempt to tackle such an issue is to keep reminding oneself how Jesus would have reacted if put in the same position as such controversies today.
