The concept of energy is typically fundamental. The total source of energy comes from the sun. Energy can be defined as the ability or capacity to do work. It cannot be either created or destroyed. For example, to walk up a flight of stairs requires energy. In order for a person to walk up a flight of stairs, the energy used comes from some food source. Food contains potential energy that can be accumulated
for a period of time before an organism can use it. Fortunately, this energy can be converted into bond energy in some cellular components, for example, carbohydrates, fats, or proteins. When the spring is released, the energy transforms to kinetic energy. Potential energy is the energy present in matter because of its location. The person's body utilizes that energy to walk up the flight of stairs. The most general forms of energy are potential energy and kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. When glucose, a monosaccharide, is oxidized, the bond energy of the glucose molecule is converted into the chemical energy of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecules. Some examples of kinetic energy are electricity, heat, or mechanical energy. Although energy can neither be created nor destroyed, one form of energy can be converted or transformed into another. It can also be converted to mechanical energy, as an organism becomes mobile. Conversions of energy can take place in living organisms. Moreover, before an organism as a whole can expend energy, the basic units of life, cells, require energy. For example, a compressed spring's potential energy is increased.
