The Harp
Recently I made the decision to attend a Harp concert with my girlfriend and her family. I must admit to thinking that all this time the instrument called "The Harp" was strictly used to put people to sleep. I was not at all prepared for the miracle I was about to receive. As I sat there in the front row positioning myself for a good nap I suddenly heard the most beautiful music my ears have ever witnessed. Letizia Belmondo had begun a performance that would completely change the way I felt about all types of music.Out of the 6 pieces played I will briefly mention 2. The first was the opening piece of her performance and was written by the composer Domenico Scarlatti (born Naples, 26 October 1685; died Madrid, 23 July 1757). The piece was Andante Moderato - Sonata in F Minor. In my research I found tha . . .
t Scarlatti wrote the book on many complicated techniques, such as hand-crossing, rapidly repeated notes, wide leaps in both hands and countless other means of achieving a devastating brilliance of effect. Being a "newbie" to this form of music I have been struggling to find any information on the story of these songs. Not a whole orchestra accompanied by a choir. I came to realize that the harp is ONE instrument alone. I can tell you that all my life I have never been a very emotional person. Letizia had no doubt spent many years mastering these techniques as she clearly portrayed in her rendition of this piece. What I truly enjoyed was that I could create my own story while hearing the piece. This man both during his time and still today was recognized as the "King of Harpists". I think that having a good imagination is definitely a prerequisite to doing this but several times I caught myself writing my own story to the sound of those amazing strings. I certainly intend to dig deeper to find what amazing tale the composer was writing the musical piece for these and other classical works I hear in the future. When I saw Letizia perform it literally brought tears to my eyes. Of all the works I had the pleasure of listening too this was the most moving. As far as the harp is concerned I have a whole new respect thanks to Letizia Belmondo of Italy. I can strongly attest to feeling emotions that I never knew existed. Just one amazingly gifted human being creating a perfect arrangement of notes and vibrations to awaken the soul and open the mind.
