The Treaty of Versailles was a peace agreement between Germany and the Allies signed at the end of The Great War on January 18, 1919. The countries that were involved in this armistice were the United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, and the German Republic, which had just replaced the incumbent German government that was excluded from the meeting.The Republican Party in the United States, which was opposed to the treaty, consisted of Irreconcilables and Reservationists (who were the main reason that the bill did not pass in Congress).President Wilson, a democrat, considered spreading Democracy throughout the world, one of his most important goals. After the refusal to join the League of Nations, the country was searching for some sort of "normalcy" which was the platform of Warren G. Harding, and vice presidential nominee Calvin Coolidge. He later died four days after collapsing at a Party function. This horrible economic status was only lifted after the rise of Hitler, and the NAZI party. Harding was considered a failed president, because in the eyes of many he lacked the qualities necessary to become a powerful leader, and most importantly, his administration is marked with corruption and scandal. During Harding's administration, tariff rates rose to an all time high, the income tax rate slowly decreased within the higher brackets, and the United States once again became isolated from the rest of the world.
