TO WHAT EXTENT WAS GERMANY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GREAT WAR?

Germany was mainly to blame for the outbreak Great War. Although other countries were partially to blame for there actions, which lead to the outbreak of war; it is clear that they only played a minor role in the eruption of the Great War. The Great War was caused by countless reasons and the extent to which these reasons were caused Germany depends on what actions the German leaders and ministers engaged in, to the lead up of 1914. We must consider Germany's lust for European domination, their entangled web of alliances, there strong sense of militarism, imperialism and nationalism which lead to many short term crises when we conclude that Germany was mainly responsible for the outbreak of the Great War.The major cause of the First World War was militarism and it is clear that Germany played a major role in this. Germany was always in favor of settling their problems though war. This is evident from some forty-four years before the start of the Great War; where Prussia, the leading state in Germany fought against France. The French where quickly defeated by Germany, and had to accept the peace treaty which gave Germany Alsace-Lorraine, rich in coal and iron. From the onset of the 20th century Germany had expected and stated

The Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance were formed because Germany was afraid that the French would take revenge after the loss of Alsace Lorraine and therefore he wanted to isolate them from other Great Powers. The Germans 'claimed' that they were protecting their trade and empire however they already had the biggest army and there was no need for them to have the biggest navy. Imperialism also played a major part in the outbreak of the Great War and although other nations played a role in Imperialism Germany were the greatest contributor and the major cause of this. Germany had already stated increasing its arms spending by three hundred and fifty percent since 1870. It is hard to disagree that German militarism, nationalism, imperialism, entangled web of alliances and short term actions caused much of the tension in Europe which in turn lead to the Great War. France had lost Alsace-Lorraine to Germany already and therefore, had the right to gain another new colony. This was just an excuse the Germans used so that they were able to launch a pre-emptive strike against France, through Belgium. All this However had very little to do with Germany. He wanted Germany to be better than all the other Great Powers in Europe. He believed a large empire would provide Germany with a market for industries and demonstrate to the rest of the world Germany's greatness. On the 31st of July, Germany gave Russia a threatening ultimatum. Britain and France had large empires and therefore the Kaiser was determined to build an empire and as he said 'gain a place in the sun'. Germany had caused the Great War indirectly in this instance, but it is quite clear they played a major part in the trigger point of the Great War. It is blatantly obvious when all the facts that are studied into the lead up of the Great War that Germany was mainly responsible for the outbreak of this tragedy. He then called an international conference to discuss the future of Morocco.
