A Breakthrough in Reality

Many observations on life or a variety of human conditions are expressed throughout this novel, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, has many meaningful themes. One major theme that is effective throughout the novel is done and expressed by one man, with the concept of ego. This man, Equality 7-2521, dared to express his individuality as "I" rather than universally as "we." With his distinctive beliefs, the theme of this novel is the power of one's belief in standing alone can overcome the beliefs of many. This theme is expressed through Equality 7-2521's actions, thoughts, and feelings.
Equality 7-2521 stands alone by his actions. He shows that no matter what the boundaries are, his beliefs come first. This is evident through the decisions he makes and also through his discoveries. Anthem opens up with:
" It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think of words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if were speaking alone to no ears but our own. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone." (Pg 1)
This passage reveals his individuality in standing alone. It was a sin to write, but his new beliefs surpassed his old belief. Other actions Equality 7-2521 expressed are his discovery of the tunnel and the light bulb. His discoveries are the beginning to a new future. Even though it is a sin to think at a higher level than a scholar is, his one discovery overcame the many discoveries of all the scholars. The power of one is greater than the power of all, is proved from this discovery. When he made the decision to break out of jail to go to the convention, he showed he believed in this work so much that the consequences did not matter. Equality 7-2521's actions are a piece to the motive of the power of one's belief in standing alone can overcome the beliefs of many.
