Macbeth - Conseqhences
Consequences are an intricate part of our day-to-day lives; they are the result of our every action and are our only real benchmark for right and wrong. Macbeth experienced many consequences in his rise to power and his subsequent descent. Because Macbeth was of the opinion that he was not accountable for his actions he never actually took the time to foresee their consequences. It was this complete lack of regard that led to the murder of Duncan, the first act of treachery that sent Macbeth's life spinning violently out of control. The appeal of power was too great for Macbeth. The prediction of the three weird sisters, three people he had never met before, was enough to make him betray his family, his own flesh and blood as well as his country. While this murderous act earned Macbeth the throne it was not enough of a reward to quell his bloodthirsty nature. Macbeth continued to perform calculated acts of violence with a complete disregard for the consequences, murdering his friend and fellow war hero Banquo. This lack of assurance is what drove former friends like Ross to leave Macbeth's fold and join forces with those plotting against him. The final blow to Macbeth's feeling of personal security came when he killed Macduff's wife, the wife of the man who would later become his sworn enemy, his nemesis. If one is not able to understand the effects of something on ones self how is one supposed to know the magnitude of the consequence of ones actions, Macbeth should have asked himself this question. This end came about due to Macbeth's lack of regard for the consequences of his actions. It is unimaginable that someone who has just killed his own king and has now brought unwanted suspicion unto himself would allow the people he needs the most at a time such as this to continue to believe that he is of unstable mind. Macbeth -4-allowed his ambition to consume his thinking to the point that he betrayed those he loved as well as his country. Through Macbeth's treachery much was lost, the first of which was his life, which came about as a result of his actions. But even this type of recognition could not save him from the consequences of his actions. The final consequence Macbeth did not consider was the alienation of his fellow nobles and friends, which led to Macbeth's eventual loss of his kingdom. When it was discovered that Malcolm and Donaldbain had fled the country the comment by Lennox that if the sons had remained under the care of Macbeth they would surely be dead. Loss of respect in the eyes of the people in his community was a direct result of Macbeth's resolve to maintain power. But one thing is self-evident Macbeth did not even understand his own self enough to avoid these feelings and this great embarrassment. Macbeth, blind to the fact that he was being controlled allowed his ambition to consume him and subsequently he lost everything his respect amongst his peers, his kingdom, and eventually his life as well. While the murder of Lady Macduff directly led to his loss of life his ambition also led to other things that were connected to his demise. But again Macbeth elected to neglect the consequence of what he was doing and as such he made the prophecy of the three weird sisters ambiguous.
