One of the most sugnificant waya hindi can offer devotion to a diety or a spiritual teacher is at home. Most hindu homesset a corner of a room, a cabinet, or sometimes a whole room for where small pictures orsmall images of the lord are enshrined. The vedic culture does not indicate any trace of temple worship. It seems possiblethat by the year 500 public shrines became popular, but now temples are a very commonpart of the Indian landscape. Nonetheless the structure of different temples and patternsof worship vary accordingly. Dieties in a hindu temple are treated like royalty. In home worship, simpler versions of some temple rituals take place. Puja mayinvolve daily lighting of oil lamps and incense sticks, recitation of prayers, or offering foodto the deity. Mostly most or all of the f
This food now is considered prasada. The term murti is variously translated as 'idol', 'icon', or 'object to beworshipeed'. Devotees frequnelty walk around the templeinside one of the enclosures, thus circumambulating the deity. The word literally means'clarity' meaning 'divine favour', a gift from god. Preists and ritualspecialists offer prayers to the deity on behalf of the devotee. This body of water may be a pond, river, sea, or even an artificial pool called a 'tank' in India. At the centre of thetemple is the garbha grha, 'the womb-house'. More widespread are the auspiciousnessrituals that women conduct in many parts of india. It is located near a body of waterwhich automatically becomes a holy body of water. A temple has a correlation to the universe and to the body of divine beings, and istherefore planned with care. In the temple worship devotees belive that the presence of God in the temple doesnot detract from his or her presnece up in heaven.
