Puja

Bhakti Yoga : at home or in a temple.

Bhakti yoga is the yoga of devotion. Devotion to god. Rituals performed in the

home of a person are generallly called puja (‘worship’). One of the most sugnificant way

a hindi can offer devotion to a diety or a spiritual teacher is at home. Most hindu homes

set a corner of a room, a cabinet, or sometimes a whole room for where small pictures or

small images of the lord are enshrined.

The vedic culture does not indicate any trace of temple worship. It seems possible

that by the year 500 public shrines became popular, but now temples are a very common

part of the Indian landscape. Nonetheless the structure of different temples and patterns

of worship vary accordingly. Dieties in a hindu temple are treated like royalty. Everyday

the deity is given a ritual bath, adorned, taken in processions during festivals, and given

practically every royal honours. the reason so much attention goes to the dieties is

because the enshrined images are regarded as God.

In home worship, simpler versions of some temple rituals take place. Puja may

involve daily lighting of oil lamps and incense sticks, recitation of prayers, or offering food

to the deity. Mostly most or all of the f

. . .

This food now is considered prasada. The term murti is variously translated as ‘idol’, ‘icon’, or ‘object to be

worshipeed’. Devotees frequnelty walk around the temple

inside one of the enclosures, thus circumambulating the deity. The word literally means

‘clarity’ meaning ‘divine favour’, a gift from god. Preists and ritual

specialists offer prayers to the deity on behalf of the devotee. It is a ritual

when the preist will recite the names of the deity, thus praising him or her. this is where the lord or the goddess are

enshrined. This body of water may be a pond,

river, sea, or even an artificial pool called a ‘tank’ in India. At the centre of the

temple is the garbha grha, ‘the womb-house’. More widespread are the auspiciousness

rituals that women conduct in many parts of india. It is located near a body of water

which automatically becomes a holy body of water.

A temple has a correlation to the universe and to the body of divine beings, and is

therefore planned with care.

In the temple worship devotees belive that the presence of God in the temple does

not detract from his or her presnece up in heaven.
