Comparing 1984 and Animal Farm
George Orwell is perhaps one of the greatest authors of political ficition in our time. Two of his most famous and most popular novels are undoubtedly Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm. Orwell considered himself to be a socialist, but he was very critical of communism and especially totalitarianism. These two books explicitly express Orwell's political opinions, especially by means of satire. However, after reading and analyzing the two novels, it is clear to see that the two stories share an abundance of similarities and parallels. In a sense, these two great works are very much alike. One of the first things that a person may notice upon reading these two novels is the direct similarity of the characters. It is easy to see the similarities between Napoleon and Big Brother. In a way they are almost the exact character. The way they got into power was by overthrowing the previous regime. In the case of Napoleon, it was Mr. Jones, the farmer, and in the case of Big Brother, it was the capitalists. They also betrayed their closest comrades and allies by expelling them from the community. Napoleon betrayed his companion, Snowball, and nearly had him killed by the dogs in order to establish a totalitarian system, whil
This difference in the character traits caused the two novels to encompass completely different plots despite the many obvious similarities. Winston works at the Ministry of truth, where his job, day in and day out, is to change and manipulate different forms of text, mainly newspaper articles. The manner in which these two characters act politically is very similar. Squealer performs a similar function in Animal Farm. Snowball and Napoleon also started out ass equals, sharing the responsibilities of making sure that everything ran smoothly after Mr. The most striking similarity between Boxer and Parson is their blind, unquestioning faithfulness to their master. No one can even be sure whether Big Brother exists; all they have is a reminder that he is watching them. This change in the constitution allowed the pigs to lead a more luxurious lifestyle then the rest of the animals. Both Big Brother and Napoleon are guilty of the same crimes. While Squealer was entirely loyal and supported Napoleon, Winston was against Big Brother from the beginning and wanted to overthrow him. It creates and circulates lies about everyone and everything. This is the employment center of the main character, Winston. In a similar fashion, once he has established absolute power and rule, Napoleon secludes himself with his fellow pigs in the farmhouse. Both of their tasks within their system are to alter the past in order to suit the present.
