A Doll House
The Critical Analysis of A Doll's HouseA Doll's House follows the growing of Nora Helmer from her unexamined life of domestic comfort. Ruled her life by either her father or her husband, Nora must question the foundation of everything she believes in when her marriage is put to the test. (Classic Note on A Doll's House).Having borrowed money from a man named Krogstad by forging her father's signature, she was able to pay for a trip to Italy to save her sick husband's life. He was unaware of his condition and the loan, believing that the money came from Nora's father. Since then, she has had to find ways to pay back her loan, having great concern with money. When the play opens, it is Christmas Eve and we find out that Torvald has just been promoted to manager of the bank, where he receives a big raise. Nora is excited because she thinks that she will finally be able to pay off the loan and be rid of it. Her happiness, however, is cut when Krogstad approaches her in an angry manner. He has just found out that his position at the bank has been given to Mrs. Linde, an old school friend of Nora's who has just recently come into town looking for work, and tells Nora that he looking for work, and tells Nora that he will reveal her s
This suggests that he sees women as childlike, helpless creatures lacking knowledge of reality. When Torvald returns from the bank she begins to plead again behalf of Krogstad. At the beginning of the second Act, before the climax, her reaction to Krogstad dropping his letter in the box, Nora is still trying to except that fact that her world could be shattered. He refers to her as his little "lark" and "squirrel"(small harmless animals). Instead, he's going to give Torvald a letter explaining the situation. The Doctor came by to say his final good-byes. This time, Torvald not only refuses, but he also sends the notice of termination that he already had prepared for Krogstad, reassuring Nora that he will take care of any bad things that could happen to them. And perhaps more importantly, Nora is quite candid about her understanding of all this, telling him flatly that she knows. Unfortunately the Doctor was no help because he took Nora's words the wrong way and confessed his love for her. Linde refers to Nora dress as her "fine feathers" restating the perception of Nora as a non-human object, a creature free of cares. Torvald repeatedly calls Nora his "little girl" or "little one", seeming more like a father rather than a husband. Nora then tries to use her charm to prevent Torvald from opening that letter. ecret if she does not convince her husband to let him keep his position. He tells her he plans on nothelping her with anything. Like Nora, it is torn and in need of repairs.
