John Fitzgerald Kennedy
It's June of 1961 and a wall has just started to be constructed to separate a nation. The United States needs to send a man to spread good will and build unity among America's allies. Who is this man? Who could be such a diplomat? America sent their 35th President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.Kennedy was a democrat, the first Roman Catholic to hold office, and the youngest President to date. He was educated at Harvard University and The London School of Economics. After graduation he decided to join the navy. As a veteran of World War II, Kennedy received the Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal.JFK began his political career in 1946 when he was elected into the House of Representatives. In 1956 he furthered his career by becoming the Senator of Massachusetts, defeating one of Eisenhower's close supporters. Only three years before had he gotten married to his socialite wife, Jacqueline Bouvier.Although his religion and age were considered major barriers to his presidency, Kennedy won seven primaries; making him the Democratic candidate. He was a supporter of the civil-rights legislation and a prominent internationalist.
President Kennedy arrived in Berlin on June 26, 1963. Two thousand years ago/ the proudest boast was "civis Romanus sum. "There are many people in the world who really don't understand/, or say they don't/, what is the great issue between the free world and the Communist world/. Tanks gathered at strategical places. When all are free/, then we can look forward to that day when this city will be joined as one/ and this country/ and this great Continent of Europe/ in a peaceful and hopeful globe. " Today, in the world of freedom/, the proudest boast is "Ich bin ein Berliner. East Germany is under Soviet control and West Germany is becoming a democratic nation. What is true of this city is true of Germany/--real, lasting peace in Europe can never be assured as long as one German out of four is denied the elementary right of free men, and that is to make a free choice. And I am proud to visit the Federal Republic with your distinguished Chancellor/ who for so many years has committed Germany to democracy/ and freedom/ and progress. ) World War II had ended about twenty year's prior and a defeated nation was rebuilding. An immense population had gathered in the Rudolph Wilde Platz near the undaunting wall. Over 200 people were killed trying to cross the borders to be reunited with their loved ones. There are some who say that communism is the wave of the future/. Freedom is indivisible/, and when one man is enslaved, all are not free.
