Comparison -Athens & sparta
COMPARISON ON ATHENS & SPARTA./....... In Ancient Greece most city-states were the same as the largest one, Athens. Although there was one city-state that was like no other, Sparta. Spartan people were the toughest ever. There were no walls built around Sparta, to make them fight harder; there were no lights in the city, to make the soldiers skilled at night fighting. In the city of Athens there were large walls to keep out intruders and everyone could see at night! Firstly the two cities completely different life styles will be compared. In Athens the housing was a two-storey mud brick house for most of the wealthy citizens and for the poorer citizens the houses were a simple box like dwelling with few windows and a door that led out into the street. Most houses were hidden behind mud walls that were mostly to keep out the heat and for privacy. The Spartans didn't know about privacy. What, with living in dormitory type areas most of their life, living under constant supervision and being made to go naked in winter! The Spartans spent most, if not all, of their time training or fighting. Whereas the Athenians spent their time in the agora making decisions for the city, talking or doing art. Only citizens (women and slaves
Any elder that wanted to become a member of the Gerousia appeared in person in front of the assembly. The Athenians did a little of their farming but their slaves did most of it. The two city-states were run extremely differently. Unlike helots, slaves could buy their freedom back. The helots couldn't be bought or sold and they could not move from the place they were born. Maza was made of wheat or barley and wasn't cooked like our bread but eaten as a grain paste flavoured with flaxseed oil, coriander and salt. There were two kings that ruled Sparta. The only way that an Athenian could be a citizen was if his father was a citizen, if he was a male over thirty years of age. There is a huge difference in the variety. Spartans despised comfortable clothing. To help the kings their was five ephors (judges) and thirty Gerousia (elders). Athenians also ate things like sausages, cheese, fish, nuts, porridge, vegetables stewed in olive oil and a jay or swallow caught in a field. weren't counted as citizens) were allowed in the agora. Whoever received the loudest cheer was elected.
