Corporate Philanthropy

Over the last ten years, business began to change some of their beliefs. In today's society, businesses now place a high value on providing service to the community. According to a report by the Conference Board and the Points of Light Foundation, 92 percent of corporate executives believed their employees should participate in community service (Stallings, 1998). Corporate executives are pushing for employees to participate in community service because everyone involved benefits. Not only is the community positively influenced, but the employees and the business also benefit. Many companies have begun to install ways for their company to help out the surrounding community. Some companies are more involved than others, but now a majority of business are working to help out the community. The September 11, 2001 tragedy shows the change that business has made over the years. After the attacks, many companies offered their services in order to decrease chaos and to help out the general public. During this tragedy, some people offered their services because they wanted to feel patriotic by helping out the country, but others helped out just to make a difference. Countless businesses also saw this as a time where money was

Because most of the people being taught are not very aware of the subject matter, the businessperson must take control of the situation. Businesses also feel that their employees can gain a sense of leadership, while performing some of their charity work. One reason that business people spend time doing charity work is to help out children (Wiesendanger, 1994). As a result, numerous counselors came in to help calm down employees and to teach them how to deal with their problems. As a result, in the next few years, community service by business people should continue to increase. Corporate executives are now starting to realize that community service can help the business in a variety of ways. People working in the area near the World Trade Centers were so traumatized by the attacks that many of the employees needed counseling. Another skill that an employee gains while teaching is group-speaking skills (Wiesendanger, 1994). Businesses are also starting to promote community service to help gain respect from the community. As a result, they offer their time and money to try and influence their lives. Because the speakers do not want to be embarrassed in front of the audience, they end up restudying what they know, and, in turn, they may learn new information or remember information that they have forgotten. Businesses place such an emphasis on community service because they feel that employees gain business skills while they are donating their time (Wiesendanger, 1994). Business people also tend to benefit from speaking to groups by learning more about their subject matter. A combination of all of their new skills can lead employees to promotions within their company. Over the six years between the two incidents, business increased their willingness to help out the community during a time of crisis.
