Sports that use push-pull actions require the athlete to apply force continuously throughout the desired range of movement. If an athlete wants to apply maximum force to a heavy resistance, the athlete simultaneously uses the largest number of body segments that can be applied to the task such as the legs, back, shoulders and arms. The clean and jerk is an exercise that allows the athlete to apply maximum force when using the push-pull action.
In the exercise, clean and jerk, the “clean” means that the athlete is performing the lifting-pulling action and the “jerk” means that the athlete is performing the push action. Another action in the push-pull exercise is carrying. The athlete performs this action when he/she pauses with the bar at the chest and when the bar is at arm’s length above the head. The mechanical principles involved in the clean and jerk apply to all lifting, carrying and spotting techniques. Laws controlling stability also play an important role in the clean and jerk because the athlete needs to have a good stance in order to perform the exercise properly.

The objects required for this exercise are a barbell for lifting and extra weights for a more maximum performance. With the objects for the clean and jerk exercise obtainable, the athlete needs to know how to perform this skill properly. A slight flexion pre-stretches the legs. Once this happens the body needs to move into squatting position in order to lift the weight using the legs to move to an upright position, finally extending the arms pushing the bar up over the head. These efforts are not hard and only take a few seconds to perform. The bar rises in a vertical direction. However, force-producing movements are necessary. This helps to keep the athlete balanced and stable. The follow through for this exercise requires that the athlete push the bar outward letting go right after allowing the bar to fall to the ground. The supporting base and bar is optimally stabilized. The resting inertia of the bar is overcome by a powerful extension of the athlete’s legs and back.
Although an athlete can perform the clean and jerk exercise correctly errors can occur if concentration is altered. The athlete is forced to split the legs at high speed and drop very low under the bar. First you should make sure to wear the proper clothing, such as loose comfortable shorts that allow for easy mobility, a T-shirt or tank top and comfortable tennis shoes to support your feet. Another error that can occur is once the bar is being pushed upward over the head the athlete extends his/her feet to the side instead of one foot moving one step back to help with force and stability.
