Pride and prejudice is a novel describing the people and times of the Victorian era. It was written by Jane Austen, who depicts a society in the eighteenth century of men/women, and families and how they are “supposed” to carry themselves. The historical work of Austin’s novel is in a time when the social standings were considered most important in upholding the family reputation. Grace, manners, old money and social standings were what you were going to be associated as. They were the biggest concerns of the eighteenth century.
“You may as well call it impertinence at once. It was very little less. The fact is that you were sick of civility, of deference, of officious attention. You were disgusted with the women who were always speaking and looking and thinking for your approbation alone. I roused, and interested you, because I was so unlike them. Had you not been really amiable you would have hated me for it; but in spite of the pains you took to disguise yourself, your feelings were always noble and just; and in your heart, you thoroughly despised the persons who so assiduously courted you. There I have saved you the trouble of accounting for it; and really all things considered, I begin to think it

Even men were to abide by this societal law. The point that Austen try’s to make, in my opinion, is that even in the Victorian age rules, regulations and social norms will never withstand true love because it has no barriers and can never be held down in any era in which you live in. At the end of the passage she voices her opinion again by stating, “I have saved you the trouble of accounting for it. She tells Darcy in the beginning if the passage that she knows he’s tired of all of these women not looking at him for his personality, but looking at him for what he could give them materialistically and how he could heighten their family name. This novel is a great example of all of these things. He has fallen for Elizabeth and is consumed her. Elizabeth sees this and simply tells him what she sees in him and how she feels. During the Victorian era a woman’s strong personality was very appalling to society. But, those women just didn’t appeal to him as much as Elizabeth because they were not themselves. This is one reason why he is so attracted to Elizabeth. They were exactly what society wanted them to be. She also tells him that he has seen this and hates himself for playing along with it because it is what society expects him to do. Elizabeth was thought to be a threat to her family’s welfare because of her outspoken opinions.
