School Uniforms
"If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets then our public schools should be able to require students to wear school uniforms." (State of the Union Address) This quote by Bill Clinton sums up exactly why school uniforms should be implemented in every public school. School uniforms would not only decrease violence and discrimination but it would also promote a better school atmosphere. One of the primary reasons school uniforms would decrease violence is because it would deny gang members and other groups to display their garb and colors on campus. This would cut down the number of fights and suspensions that every school has. Sex offenses have become another part o
School uniforms would act as social equalizers. Therefore, they would take school more seriously. I think that school uniforms are a very good idea. Uniforms promote a "down to business" atmosphere. The parents wouldn't have to worry about buying designer clothes and the students wouldn't have worry about getting up an hour early just to decide what to wear. These cliques serve to judge and discriminate against those who are of lesser social and economic classes. In a study done at Long Beach High School sex offenses dropped from 57 sex offenses to 2 in three years. Cliques have become a common type of discrimination in schools. School uniforms would also make it easier on the teachers and staff to enforce the dress code because the students wouldn't have anything to choose from except the uniform or go home. Students would also feel that they were part of a team by wearing a uniform. One of the most widely used excuses is that the girl was dressed too sexy or provocative. Not only would violence within the school be cut, but it would also keep intruders out because they could be easily spotted if all the students were wearing similar clothing. (Long Beach) Crimes, such as theft of expensive clothing or footwear, would also be reduced. This discrimination could lead to a lower self-esteem, dropping out of school, or at the worst suicide.
