Male-Dominating Social Tradition

             Gender differences are the stereotype shaped by the man-dominating social tradition, thus there is no genetic difference in the way men and women use language. In English language, most people believe that the language base is a reflection of the male's dominance. Word choice somehow broadens the meaning towards man, but it constricts the meaning towards women. Also, in society, essentially in the media, often men are viewed as dominant, while women as subordinate. Such stereotype is often portrayed in the media such as television shows, news, and televised sports. This evidence show how men depict women and how they continue to feel dominant over women.
             Sexist language can creep into American's everyday usages. In society, female linguistics are degraded compared to the male linguistics. For example, a generic word "man" represents all men and even women. This word can be found in the earlier Declaration of Independence document that declares "...all men are created equal." Only until the 1800s, when women had gained their rights, and this document was then paraphrased to"...all men and women are created equal" (Constance Rynder). In the bible, it is written "God created man in his own image" (Genesis 1:26-2:25). Nevertheless, the word "women" isn't mentioned. Also, there is a problem with the gender-based language associated with the "he" pronoun usage. This problem was begun during the 16th and 17th centuries when the first modern English writers were all men writers (Men's Conversation vs. Women's Conversatiom). As a result, this language is a form of oppression towards women because it keeps the women from being viewed equal to men. For example, several simple terms in the dictionary such as "mailman," "chairman," and "policeman" are obviously implied men's roles for occupation. Thus, women's language is...
