The story of David and Goliath has been told for more than two thousand years. It has also raised the interests of historians to see if the story can be proven. Now, before we make any conclusions, about the story, there are several questions we need to ask: could David have killed
a person with a sling, could the place where the battle happened existed, and the final thing we need to ask ourselves is, could giants have existed two thousand years ago?
Now before we talk about David's ability to kill a person with a sling, we need to familiarize ourselves with the weapon David used. The sling, used at the time of the battle, may have been made out of woven fibers and some sort of animal hide. The next question we need to think about is, was the sling around during the time of David's existence? The answer is yes. "Carbon dating has shown that prehistoric man not only used the sling, but hunted with it as well" (Tunis 15). Now after having taken part in the "SHSU Great Sling Research Project" I have come to a conclusion. A person, if given enough time, could become skilled with a sling. One more thing that gives this idea credit is the fact that, David was able to scare off, or even kill, anima
. . .
There are stories in there stating that the good book itself was past on from person to person. Robert was eight feet and eleven inches tall in 1940, shortly before his death. Why was David so good with a sling? He was out watching his sheep day in and day out for years with nothing else to do, but practice throwing his sling. The next question we should ask is, how tall was Goliath? Some historians say that Goliath was eight feet tall, some say he was ten feet tall, and even others say he was eleven feet tall. If this man was more than eight feet tall he certainly would have been considered a giant. This height would be very abnormal two thousand years ago. Even now it is still abnormal to find people more than eight feet tall, but this phenomenon does happen. Now that we have a setting we must figure out if David could have beaten Goliath one on one. Just like the Greeks, "Much of the fighting seems to have been single combat between armored heroes while the ranks of both armies simply stood and watched" (Tunis 25). He would probably have exceeded nine feet in height had he survived for another year" (Kynaston 153). So ultimately, if the stories in the Bible were important enough to write down, there must be some truth to them. "The tallest person ever, for whom there is irrefutable evidence, was Robert Wadlow.
In conclusion, why couldn't the story of David and Goliath be true? For example, many of the Viking folk lore has been pasted down from generation to generation, through word of mouth. If this was the case, the Philistines must have been shocked to see a boy agree to Goliath's challenge.
