Kino vs. Jonas: A Closer Look

Kino vs. Jonas: A Closer Look at their Attributes Have you ever read about two different characters in two different novels who are so similar and yet so different at the same time? Recently, I've read about two characters who fit this description perfectly. These two characters are Kino and Jonas. Kino is the main character in a novel called The Pearl by John Steinbeck, which is about a man who finds fortune and tries to help his family out with the money, but soon fails because of his lack of knowledge. Kino's thoughtfulness and sentimental attitude reminds me of Jonas from The Giver by Lois Lowry because Jonas becomes very loving and caring toward his family and friends throughout the book. These two characters are similar in that they both exhibit being thoughtful and loving, but they are different in that Jonas demonstrates that he is very curious while Kino isn't. Speaking of similar qualities, throughout the novel, The Pearl, Kino repeatedly demonstrates being thoughtful and loving. For example, on page 24, Kino planned for his baby boy to be very fortunate in life by having rich clothes, "But Coyotito - he was the one - he wore a blue sailor suit from the United States and a little yachting cap such as Kino's".

Jonas didn't want him to die so he reassured Gabriel that he loved him and cared for him. These two characters are similar and dissimilar in may ways, and it is obvious that they are unique in their own way because of their traits no matter what kind of characteristic qualities they revealed to readers. Throughout the novel, The Giver, Jonas repeatedly demonstrates being thoughtful and loving just as the character in The Pearl, Kino. He's very mature unlike his friend, Asher, to not fool around when it came to caring for the old seniors. This quote explains that Jonas was very curious and wanted to know what it was like out there, but he didn't want to take any risks to explore. This showed that Jonas was very curious. These two characters have a very special trait in common, but they also have some dissimilar traits. What makes Jonas differ from Kino is that throughout the book, The Giver, Jonas presented that he was very curious and that he wasn't really a risk taker at all. Kino's ambition was to have Juana be safe and to hide from danger, so he told Juana to hide herself with Coyotito while he lead the watchers into the mountains. Furthermore, on page 101, Jonas was very curious and wanted to know what causes pain, " 'Giver,' he asked one afternoon following a day when he had been sent away, 'what causes you pain?' ". This showed that he really cared about whatever happened to Coyotito and Juana. This quote showed that Jonas was very serious about his volunteer work. This quote insured the readers that Jonas had a kind heart to think about Gabriel and his safety.
