From Gillian's Island to the Real World
There are many differences between the generation that grew up in the 1970's and the generation that is growing up now because of influences from music, clothing and television. Many of these changes are just fads but some of them are here to stay. Some of these changes have been beneficial while others have not been so beneficial.
Music has changed a great deal. Back in the seventies people used to listen to disco, such as Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, and ABBA. Synchronized dancing was big. Many studios popped up that taught people how to disco dance. A movie that captured the feeling of the music of the 1970's was "Saturday Night Fever". Dancing was not that provocative according to today's standard. In the current generation the music such as hip-hop is very popular. There are radio stations that only play this kind of music. Dancing is very suggestive. Music of the 70's generation is similar to music now in that many songs focus on boyfriend-girlfriend relationships.
Another big thing that has changed through time is clothing. In terms of shoes, kids wore big clunky shoes with a platform heel. The heel was often carved out of wood. Obviously they were very uncomfortable. Now skate shoes, such brands as DVS and Globe are what everyone buys. They are very comfortable, sometimes kids don't even tie the laces which make them feel like slippers. Compared to the type of casual shoes of the past they probably resemble boats. Angel Flight pants were a big thing for the guys to wear. They were very tight fitting and made out of polyester. They flared out at the bottom. They would wear them with a tight fitting silky material shirt and tuck it in and also wear a belt. This is very much in contrast to what young men of today wear. Boys wear baggy jeans with their boxers hanging out and shirts that are too big.
