A Dolls House - Ending Explain
The play a dolls house by Henrik Ibsen is based on house hold life and the role of woman in the 19th century. When Henrik Ibsen wrote this play he designed two possible endings. The critics and the viewers liked the original ending which was traditional and boring, the ending that most families would like to see. The viewers wanted the story they could relate the characters and house hold to their own. But Henrik wanted something different. He was sick and tired of the same traditional and boring writing style. So he added a little spice to the ending, the ending that took decades to be appreciated. He ended the story unhappy for the time it was written. Times as well as people and society changed. The unhappy ending he wrote then is now considered happy.Nora and Torvald, main characters in "A Dolls House" take t
Woman's role in that 19 century was to be a nurturer, to stay home, take care of the children, complete household tasks and to attend to ones husband. I think the ending Ibsen chose was the better of the two. Many readers/watchers of the play criticized the ending that Ibsen preferred, and deemed it immoral and wrong, they preferred typical and boring. Ibsen tries to tackle woman's rights as a matter of importance. For the time we live in now things are different, woman's rights are much stronger, and men are increasingly taking the role in the household. Why would anyone want to sit in a play and watch their own typical family up on stage? Although reading the play now it's not much different then the society we live in. But for the 19th century leaving your husband was unheard of. During the time period when this play was written people neglected the rights of woman. I think the play gave a great sense of what a family house holds were like in the 19th century, as well as a clear understanding to how much society and morals have changed over the years. he roll of the typical husband and wife in the 19th century. Many woman everyday leave their husband to start a new life. Overall I thought A Dolls House was a pretty good play. But I feel that if I read this play in the 19th century I would have appreciated it more.
