World War I is often referred to as the "great war", or "the war to end all war's". It was the most significant event of the twentieth century. The war all started after the European nations divided themselves into alliance systems, the Triple Alliance, and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance consisted of the German Empire,
Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The Triple Entente was made up of Britain, France, and the Russian Empire. These alliances were supposed to deter confrontations but instead created enemies. Another reason for the war was the assassination of the crown prince of Austria, Franz Ferdinand by a young Serbian named Princip while he was visiting Sarajevo to inspect troops on June 28, 1914. Princip fired two shots, one hitting ferdinand in the throat and the other striking his wife, Sophia in the stomach, killing them both. Life at home for Canadians was good, most people worked at weapons factories or sent food and supplies over to the soldiers. As soon as Britain declared war, Canada was automatically involved.
Conclusion:
All because of one young terrorist from Serbia assassinating the prince of Austria, Franz Ferdinand and his wife, all of Europe was involved in this great war. Also they provided excellent armor to whoever was riding in it. There headquarters were in Nova Scotia.
Life in the trenches was terrible for the soldiers. Liege was surrounded by 12 concrete forts and was considered as the strongest position in Europe. The wives didn't want there husbands to go to war so some men stayed because of that. When they were called to "go over the top" they had to run through no mans land, dodging grenades, bombs, and gunfire. During the war women gained respect by showing that they could do men's jobs. They always had to be looking out attacks or bombs falling everywhere.
