The Church and Principles of a Justifiable War

             War is a complicated subject that has ignited the interests of many scholars over the years. The human culture is concerned with the topic and for a good reason. War itself is as old as man; they can be seen as going hand in hand with each other. Until the day that we as humans can find ways to overcome the answer to war with a safer alternative, we will always have war. War can be seen depicted in the drawings of early Paleolithic man, and history has shown that it is unavoidable. "We go to war; we will always go to war"-Thucydides. This concept is very accurate and applies to our current generation, which is fascinated with war, along with previous and future generations. Now, just as before, there continue to be productions of countless images, pictures, books, and movies dedicated to the subject of war. One could argue that all that has changed is how war is fought. Advances in technology have made current warfare extremely destructive and far more unsafe for the entire world population. The invention of the Nuclear Bomb has been the largest leap in technology to the present date. This invention gave the man the power to annihilate himself in an extremely efficient way. This complicated topic increases in complexity when one applies the morality of the Catholic Church to the situation. This brings up many questions, the main one being whether or not the taking of life is justified and if war itself can then be justified. The Church's views have changed throughout history, and to this day, there are still mixed views and opinions on the topic.
             Before the fourth century, the Church advocated only peace and in no way saw warfare as justified. This only seems right for the religion founded upon the Golden Rule that instructs one to treat one another, as you would want to be treated. It would almost be contradictory for the Church to support a war of any kind. War, however, is a part of human life and for the Christian Faith...
