Sacrifice

a) In order to become a member of the church a Christian must be prepared to sacrifice his/her life for God. A Christian must distance him/herself from his/her material things, because as Jesus said; ‘it is harder for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle’. A Christian must also show his/her loyalty to God and understand that his/her real family is not their relatives but those who carry out God’s will. Above all a Christian must ‘deny himself and take up his cross’. If a Christian wants to become a member of the church he/she must be prepared to sacrifice his/her reputation, because in following God a Christian must restrain from being tempted by other people’s lifestyles and forget about his/her reputation.

b) Jesus taught that it is the devotion and sacrifice of the person that counts and not the amount that he gives. In the story of the Widow in the temple treasury, the widow gives two small copp

In order to answer this question, it is important to firstly understand who Jesus’ family is and whether or not they really are part of his family.

c) Mark 1:4; Jesus said ‘only in his home town, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honour’. A Christian would believe that he/she will get rewarded in heaven for his/her services and faith to God. The key point to the idea is that someone won’t get rewarded if that person only follows God for the rewards, because that’s not faith and it is faith that is the key to the Kingdom of God. This is why Jesus didn’t consider the family to be so important, because he knew that those who were committed to the Kingdom of God found a better family and a family which Jesus did think was important. So the irony is that a Christian must follow God and have faith in God, with no desires for a reward (as it is said in prayer; “work and ask for no reward”) and yet they are the only one’s that are rewarded. Jesus doesn’t often mention his family and since he is the Son of God and came from a virgin birth it would be difficult to know who to call his real family anyway.

Jesus did consider commitment to the Kingdom of God more important than the family, because it was his mission to be committed to the Kingdom of God and once someone entered the Kingdom of God he became part of a very large family, a family which consisted of those that had faith. er coins, probably worth a minute’s pay, and although she has given significantly less than the religious leaders, it is worth a lot more, because she has significantly less money than the religious leaders and therefore costs a lot more for her. Jesus’ mother Mary is the only real blood relative he had, since she was a virgin when she gave birth, Joseph can’t be called his real father and since Mary was a virgin, she isn’t seen quite in the same light as a normal mother is seen. Since Jesus was the Son of God and had a mission in spreading the word, all those that followed what he said and believed in God would be like his children, because their faith was down to him. It was more of a sacrifice for the Widow to give two small copper coins than it was for the religious leaders to give larger amounts of money; this is because the religious leaders were able to give more money whereas the widow couldn’t. So Jesus had an unusual family and made up for this by creating a new family – a family of followers, a family of believers and a family with faith.
