Some believe that life hasn't changed since the terrorist attacks on our country. After that day though, not only our moral but also the mental health of America has been disturbed. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder tears apart the mental health of many Americans. Prior to the attacks, these rates were high, leading to increased depression and substance abuse. Though mental disorders have been considerably high in recent years, after the attacks on New York's skyscrapers, anxiety disorders have risen as the leader of America's mental disorders. Before September 11, anxiety disorders were already the most common mental illness in America. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 3.5% of the population suffers from some form of an anxiety disorder. Women, according to an abstract article by Sarah Glazer, experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) twice as often as men do after an exposure to a shocking event. People who suffer from PTSD feel that they are unable to control their emotions. They often experience heart palpitations, dizziness, and extreme sweating. Now our country has its guard up and is ready to fight. With the lives remaining average for some, other still were uprooted and torn apart. When the human body is in danger it produces natural opiates which numb the pain. Many of those who watched the collapse of the World Trade Center will have mental flashbacks of the horrible acts of terrorism. Many believe it was just a little bump in life's road and the world will continue to turn. Across America, business suits have bonded together and display patriotic flags in car windows. In cases of PTSD, the hippocampus (the part of the brain that is responsible for memory and emotion) appears altered, according to NIMH. This number is expected to rise with time. Daily routines have been disturbed and the over all mental health has changed. She began to feel the symptoms and immediately recognized them as a panic attack directly related to PTSD. Across the United States there is mourning and anger still. In people with PTSD, the body continues to produce these opiates, causing the body to suffer from the known symptoms such as sweating and dizziness. She had never been exposed to a traumatic event prior to September 11, and because of that day she now suffers from an anxiety disorder that may hinder every day life. Common business people were most closely affected from this event after many offices were demolished.
