“…His first violent sin…” did not stop Stephen from praying. He went to confession and he realized that it was “…beautiful to live in grace…”. “…Her image…” represented art, freedom and sexuality for him. Stephen’s first major disappointment with the church was with Father Dolan. Even though his “…confession had been good…” his sin was with him and he believed he had “…amended [his] life, have I not?”
Stephen’s second disappoint with the church was with the director. Being “…cruel and unfair to make him kneel…,” Father Dolan “…pandybat…” Stephen. Once again, his church betrayed him. He “…neither believed in it nor disbelieved in it…”. “…God was almighty…” and God will forgive him because he “…loves- with a divine love…”.
