Kino

We have all causally thought about having an immense amount of money, but never did we think of the effect it would have on our mind, body, and soul. The Pearl is about how Kino, a poor diver encounters a valuable pearl that brings him desolation. The theme of The Pearl is how money can modify a person. This theme is developed through symbolism, plot, and characterization. Symbolism can support the theme by showing how Kino changes, characterization can support the theme of the story by displaying why the pearl makes Kino greedy, and the plot supports the theme on account of Kino changing into a furious person.

"In the surface of the great pearl he could see dreams form"(p.11). Kino began to see himself superior to others now that he had the pearl. The book's use of music is also symbolic; it most often suggests evil. "The music had gone out of Kino's head, but now, thinly, slowly, the melody of the morning, the music of the evil, of the enemy sounded, but it was faint and weak"(p.27). The music represents Kino feeling the evil emerging around him. "Kino had found the pearl of the world"(p.1). Kino thinks that the pearl will provide faith, peace, and protection, but instead he gets cheated and shattered by the pearl. All three of these examples show how the pearl is a symbol of evil; these changes can also be seen in the plot of the novel.
The plot is instrumental in finding the theme of The Pearl because it supports how Kino becomes miserable and furious. "Kino was already making a hard skin for himself against the world."(p.29). He is already getting defensive about his future. "Hush, do not speak anymore"(p.39). Kino was cruel to his wife after he found the pearl. He used to honor to Juana; now he treats her as if he is
