Explain what you believe is Orwell's opinion of communism.
The novel Animal Farm, written by George Orwell, is a satire of the Russian revolution and is written as a fable. Orwell uses real characters and events of the revolution to base the story and it's characters on. The novel portrays Orwell's opinion of communism through the actions and events that take place on a farm and their consequences. He also illustrates how easily capitalism can fall apart. He shows that neither capitalism nor communism can ever work for everyone and some people will always suffer. Orwell illustrates how, because communism can never work, Stalin came to power. He shows that people will always be naturally greedy and take advantage of positions of power. Animal farm is written with symbols to represent to various groups and individuals who played a part in the Russian revolution. This makes it easy to understand for all ages, though is still sophisticated enough to keep all ages interested.The first chapters of Animal Farm are intended to show Orwell's opinion on capitalism. It is hinted that Manor Farm was once very well run and all animals had been treated decently by Mr Jones. In recent years the farm has fallen upon harder times and many of the crops are failing. He started to establish his own private 'police-force' when he took the puppies away from their mothers right back at the beginning of the rebellion. At first Napoleon seems to be a good leader, but is then overcome by greed. Animal farm is both an engaging story, and an allegory that actually works. He believes that all people in power will become greedy and, thus, are all very similar. Communism in animal farm is represented by 'Animalism'. Propaganda is used to keep the animals from ever disagreeing with Napoleon or the changes to the commandments. They are happy to accept the orders they are given by the pigs and absorb everything they're told as being the truth. Towards the end of the book Orwell emphasizes "Somehow it seemed as though the farm had grown richer without making the animals themselves any richer except, of course, the pigs and the dogs". When Napoleon realises that Snowball could stand in the way of him coming into power he uses the dogs to drive Snowball out of the farm for good. When someone is put in a position where they can be tempted by power they probably will be. The only character in Animal Farm that seems to fully understand what has happened is the old donkey, Benjamin. Orwell shows that the temptations of privilege and power are very strong and there will always be someone in the position to take them, thus, communism can never work. The pigs sell him to the glue factory to buy alcohol for themselves. They are naturally drawn to Napoleon as it seems that they will benefit the most from his ideas of 'animalism'. It is a satire of the Russian revolution based on real characters and events.
