In the United States, the legal drinking age remains higher than any other country. College students and other young people take spring break trips to places like Mexico, because at age 18 a person may consume the desired beverage. However, these young adults risk their lives. Many youths will drink themselves sick and find themselves in trouble when they run into authorities. In the United States, youths cannot drink legally. If the current age of the drinking law was dropped, youths wouldn't need to take trips to foreign lands and risk endangering themselves. Lowering the current drinking age from 21 to 18 would help reduce the problems of rebellious underage drinkers and help find a solution to this constantly debated law. By the time a person reaches the age of 18, the responsibilities of adulthood knock on his or her door. Most will have graduated from high school and will know how to manage his or her life. At age 18, a person can vote, smoke, marry, take out loans, pay taxes, and die while serving for his or her country. The question remains, why can't this person drink? Most parents know they cannot stop their teenagers from drinking alcohol. Obviously, the DUI occurrences over 30 years stay the same regardless of any circumstance. However, putting laws and restrictions on anything clearly contradicts these rules. From a young adult's point of view, the country tells us we are responsible people. Not only do the lawmakers of the United States feel teenagers can defend the country and vote, they can stand trial as an adults. However, parents might think once or twice about this. Lawmakers changed the age to 21 because the number of drunk drivers increased. Until that day, however, will we toast to our adulthood in secrecy? . For example, a fifteen-year old charged for murder will more than likely stand trial as an adult because of the actions the youth performed. Changing the age to 18 would also decrease pressures of drinking. However, most of them drink beer to forget about their problems. Numerous times, other non-recognizable figures encounter the law and no publicity occurs afterward. However, if alcohol existed in the lives of everyone as a daily thing, then it would become a part of our culture. When people get together now, they pressure each other to drink more than what the body can handle.
