What exactly is oppression? Is it being seen as a lower people or just being
made fun of? Is it something that minorities receive from a so-called higher class?
For instance, in "The Ways of Meeting Oppression," Martin Luther King, Jr. states
that Moses tried to lead the children of Israel from the slavery of Egypt to the
freedom of the Promised Land. Only too soon did he discover that slaves do not
always welcome their deliverers. They become accustomed to being slaves. They
would rather deal with the ills they already have than flee to others they know
nothing of (463). They preferred the "Flesh pots of Egypt" to the ordeals of
Another thing that we deal with in our lives is something known as human
territories. This is something that we all are part of even if we don't know it. To
illustrate my point, take a look at your home life and think about your room. Is
your room something that you like to keep open to the public or is it something
you like to keep to yourself? This is what is known as territorial behavior. Another
good example is the friends that people have. We always try to keep our closer
friends to ourselves and never allow anyone new into our "group," except in rare
instances. Desmond Morris gives us very good ideas on the different types of this
behavior in his essay, "Territorial Behaviour."
After reading the two essays by Martin Luther King Jr. and Desmond
Morris, I have come to the conclusion that Morris' essay is far more effective
because of the organization, development, and examples given.
In the two essays by Morris and King, organization is a crucial factor to
determine which paper is more effective. Without good organization, the two
essays would confuse the reader and make them very hard to follow.
