If you ask almost any group of adolescent girls what they think of themselves or their physical appearance. One word you probably never hear them say as a response is perfect. An adolescent girl can always find something wrong with their appearance or just themselves in general. That is because most adolescent girls look at themselves in a negative way. A young woman's negative self esteem can have a huge effect in their lives it can discourage them from going out, and take away confidence needed to do everyday activities. In today's society we are bombarded with images of the perfect body on TV, billboards, magazines. Many young adolescent girls thrive to become these images of perfection and when they fail the results are devastating. The investigators that wrote this journal were interested in finding out how adolescent girls' body dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and self-esteem effected there life's concerns and leisure activates. " This study presents a preliminary investigation of the relative importance of a number of life concerns and the satisfaction including slimness and physical attractiveness for adolescent girls"(2). An emphasis on the importance of slimness and attractiveness is likely to lead to negative consequences in a society in which the beauty ideal is so thin it is impossible for most women to achieve. However, slimness is the concern that has the most harmful consequences for girls' views of their bodies and of their total selves. At one point in the journal he stated that physical appearance was the top priority later he states that it was not. They used all different types of complicated scales to measure the results of the survey. in the context of what they think is important and what they do. Academic success and intelligence were rated the most important domains, followed by physical attractiveness. Furthermore, it seems that this concern may be continually reinforced for some girls in their interactions and socializing with each other. The participants were 306 girls recruited from seven catholic high schools in metropolitan Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. The way this experiment was carried out was through a survey. The writer of this journal believed that physical appearance will be one the girl's most top priorities. In conclusion, this study has demonstrated that concern about slimness was not primary for most participants in this experiment, ranking behind the life concerns of academic success, intelligence, and physical attractiveness. I found the experiment interesting but I also found it confusing and a bit hard to understand. Also, I did not really think the survey was a very accurate way of testing. 52% of the girls admit to trying to diet at some point in their lives. Thus, interfering intended at improving the well-being of adolescent girls might target those girls high concern for slimness and assist them in the difficult task of decreasing the importance of slimness as one of their major life concerns.
