Frances In Shady Hill

As the story begins we find ourselves in a plane. The story is told through

the eyes of our main character Frances. Returning home to Shady Hill from a

business trip, which is all he wants at this point. The engine of the plane begins

to have trouble. strange events begin to occur before frances. A man sitting next

to him, your everyday working guy, pulls out a flask. Of course, frances smiles at

him because at a time like this, who could refuse a little drink? Except, the man

refuses to give Frances a swig. The man is obviously a person who is thinking

abouthimself. The author foreshadows an absence of devotion to the home life.

Passengers on theplane are singing, meanwhile the plane continues to

descend. The lyrics refer to World War 2 songs.Frances is caught up because he

was in World War 2. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the man with the flask

refers to an old pilot's slang from war time "Buy the farm." Usually reffering to the

death of a Pilot(soldier) who's benefits from the Government would be used to

pay for a family's farm. At a time like this, when the plane you're in is crashing,

that is a phrase you dont wanna hear.

Finally, the plan lands in a field and, just like that, it was a

. . .

He is definately distracted by the events of last

night. In the middle of this hectic time for Frances he must take family pictures, but

he sits upstairs writing like a little boy"I love Ann" on paper.

He has all these needs now because of his middle age realization which

probably came from his near death incident on the plane. His body surges with this new feeling, he even waits for Ann to get inside

and to her bedroom before driving away. When he gets home he finds out that she went home

early, probably because she didn't want to see him. I think thats all he really needed was to

release his thoughts and he couldn't in a town like shady hill lest he be

shunned.

She is an a bad mood so Frances gives her a shoulder to cry on. Frances enjoys his dream so much

that he becomes late for work. She's arguing over social

status because of a party they were not invited over the Writeson incident. The real problem is that

he feels like he almost died and would like to come home to a little intimacy,

instead of kids ruining the mood. Frances refers to the "Inviolable grandeur of her

nakedness", In a dark sort of sinful manner I believe frances has a sexual

awakening of sorts. I think he feels very wrong for

having these thoughts almost as if doing these things in his mind are real to him,

his mind reacts to what the community would say. Eventually we

come to another fight between Frances and Julia .
