Panama Canal vs. Suez Canal
The Panama and Suez Canals may be two of the biggest achievements in ocean history within the past couple centuries, but which one was more important globally? The Panama Canal, a waterway that cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and links the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, is about 51 miles long (The World Book Encyclopedia, Panama Canal). The Suez Canal, a narrow artificial waterway that joins the Mediterranean and Red seas, is about 118 miles long (The World Book Encyclopedia, Suez Canal). Although both canals have obviously impacted our world, the Suez Canal stands out in my mind as the canal that has the bigger impact. The Suez Canal brings in more boats each year than the Panama, and it doesn't have locks, water-filled chambers that lift boats from one level of water to another. Which canal has the most boats come through each year? This will show us which canal is used most and therefore is more global. The Suez Canal never had the problem of money because the person who started the canal finished it. All these factors pile into one conclusion: It's much safer and easier to take the Suez Canal rather than hassle with locks and dangerous lakes of the Panama Canal. Like I said, although both canals have obviously impacted our world, the Suez Canal stands out in my mind as the canal that has the bigger impact. According to the World Book Encyclopedia, the Panama Canal has about 13,500-sea vessels travel through per year. Gatun lake is a lake in which trees from the flooding of the valley sometimes get caught in propellers, causing a safety issue (The World Book Encyclopedia, Panama Canal). The Suez Canal is used more often than the Panama Canal, which leads me to believe it is more global. The Suez was much more cost-efficient in comparison to the Panama Canal. This brings us to our first statement. On the Panama Canal, you must go through a series of 3 locks, Gatun locks, Pedro Miguel locks, and Miraflores locks. The Panama Canal had problems due to the French starting the project, the diseases, the land, etc. That number divided by 365 days is about 55 ships per day, making it the most used Canal in my comparison. The Suez Canal, according to the book "Building The Suez Canal", has about 20,000 ships pass through in one year.
