The Old and the Envious
"Shakespeare told it 400 years ago, 'Crabbed age and youth cannot live together'."(Needham) It is obvious that even from Shakespeare's time that the elderly and the young have been at odds. What is the one reason that they cannot get along? One major reason is that the elderly have grown to hate the young. This feeling, at times, is mutual but more evident in the elderly. Because the elderly have passed the time in which they were young, they tend to envy the younger population. This is due to the fact that the youth still have their lives to live. The major causes for the envy that the old harbor for the young deal with the beauty that is still evident in the young but no longer in them; the fact that the youth have access to more advanced technology; and simply because the elderly refuse to understand the youth. For all these reasons and more, there is no love lost between the young and the elderly.Seeing beauty in the face of others and envying them for that beauty is something that is a regular occurrence of life. It occurs between young people as well as between older people. But, there is no envy like the envy that the old have for the young. Because physical appearance is something that cannot be hidden, it is wh
Because the elderly refuse to understand the youth, hatred grows between the two types of people. This, however, only feeds their envy. This is mostly due to the great generation gap between the two groups of people. The elderly have fear of age, as age comes with time. Students have the access to high power, advanced calculators that can determine anything from the graph of trigonometric functions to just simple division. This increases the lack of understanding between the elderly and the young and even causes more misunderstanding between them. In today's generation, the youth has access to more advanced technologies than the elderly did in their days. For example, during the time of the baby boomers the only availability for the young at that time was the library and books, whereas today the Internet provides the young with constant access to information. This jealousy has a severe affect on the elderly. They have the tendency to want to hold onto the dominance caused by age by denying facts that were true when they were young. The elderly want to be younger, in order to live longer. This thing is their ability to look down upon the actions of the youth by being condescending and acting like they were always above the simple actions of little children. Perhaps the most envied portion of "youth" that the elderly envy is the literal word, youth. The older person is forgetting what it is like not having the point of view or insight of an old person, and is choosing to ignore the obvious entertainment that it would have brought to that old person back in the "rebel-years" or the "good-old-days".
