As a reader we read about the way he describes and feels about the situation. Nathanial proves very effective as narrator as we as teenagers can successfully relate to what he talking about. This creates an atmosphere of hate towards budda who is responsible for the death of the Tod. This is shown in the way that he overcomes problems set by the Kraken and also how he discovers the key to overcoming the dark. He feels bad when he leaves the Tod out in the cold weather, which shows his constant concern for the dog.
