Prostitution

             Some people are faced with the harsh reality that they are unable to support themselves and others in this world. When a person does not have much money and lacks the experience to get a job anywhere, certain options will present themselves in desperation. One of these options is prostitution. Prostitution has been around for a long time, and wherever there are people, prostitution is bound to exist. In this paper, I will examine the possibility of prostitution and question whether or not I would subject myself to becoming a prostitute if I was put in certain situations in order to support myself and others.
             Prostitution is an unpleasant reality, but it does exist in the world. People give many different definitions for prostitution, but I will strictly use the term meaning the exchange of money from one person in exchange for sexual intercourse. There are many things that drive people to this such as a lack of experience to do anything else. In the book Loose Women, Lecherous Men: A Feminist Philosophy of Sex Linda LeMoncheck explains that "many poor women inexperienced in the job market report feeling forced by their circumstances into prostitution because they perceive no alternative to support themselves and their families" (pg 32). I certainly understand that people have to do what they have to do in order to survive. If a person tries to get a job and is turned down time and time again, should he/she starve to death unsheltered rather than to live life as a prostitute? If some people cannot subject themselves to the thought of being a prostitute, what if another person's life was dependant on that person such as a baby or a small child? There is an alternative of giving up the child to an adoption agency but I do not think I would want to do that.
