I started playing basketball when I was ten years old. Every afternoon, I would play with my friends in the local elementary school court and without any formal coaching I became quite good. When I was fourteen I joined the "third" team of APOEL, the famous Nicosia soccer club. And this is were I could say I was a real basketball player. We played against other Cypriot teams and in May of 1999 we became Cyprus champions. Sometimes I had to skip lessons at school in order to go for basketball practice,and of course we practiced every afternoon. Our competitors were the national champions of these countries, and it was natural for our team to lose most of the time because we became from a small island and we were all amateurs. In October, when we were assigned for our respective units, I was called to the armed forces national team and resumed my basketball "life". Then in July 1999 I had to join the army and do my national service. Also in summers, I missed all my holidays because of the practice and basketball camps which in one I became a MVP(Most Valuable Player) player. For three months-during the initial basic training-I could not play basketball. t in local championships which we won. Once we came very close to qualifying for the next round of European championship. Between Septemper and November we played in Greece, Latvia, Russia, Spain and Hungary. Two years later, when I was sixteen the coach of the first team selected me to play with them.
