To Kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird contains many characters. They are all very interesting and have specific tasks in the novel, but not many of them change and develop as you read. Boo(Arthur)Radley is a character in this novel, that at first, starts out as a monster. He is portrayed as a violent, crazy man who does odd things and would be a hazard to society. But as you further your reading, you find out that he is not a monster. He is just a misunderstood person whom society has made unfair judgments about. Boo Radley is a significant changing character in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird.

As we start the novel, We are given a clear picture as to how the town of Maycomb views Boo Radley. He is described as a man who had made one mistake but seemed to pay for it the rest of his life. When he was a teen, he became involved with the wrong crowd and was part of “ the nearest thing to a gang ever seen in Maycomb”(Lee10). They frequently did things that the town did not approve of, but this is the event that shapes a picture of Boo when you begin reading.

One night, in an excessive spurt of high spirits, the boys backed around the square in a borrowed flivver, resisted arrest by Ma

. . .

Jem looked from the girl doll to me. Conner, and locked him in the courthouse outhouse. Ewell to save the children and then carried Jem back to the house. He pushed Scout down, wrestles with and breaks Jem’s arm, and is about to go after Scout when out of nowhere someone comes to there aid. Radley would see to it that Arthur gave no further trouble”(Lee10). Lee doesn’t come right out and say it was Boo putting things in there, but it is easy too assume because the tree is on the Radley property.

At the start, it would have been ludicrous to think that Boo Radley would be the hero in the end. They were walking through the wood to get home from Scouts thanksgiving pageant and Mr. They were almost perfect miniatures of two children. This is a key moment in reading because you realize now that Boo cares for the children and has no intention of causing any harm to them. It is very clear now that Boo is not a monster, but a hero. But as you further your reading, you get the feeling that his legend was mistaken.
