The Attraction of the Bad GuyEver since I saw my first gangster/mobster movie it has been my favorite genre of film. For me it started with characters from Goodfellas Henry, Jimmy, Tommy, and Paulie and their ruthless criminal ways. Why is it that the audience is attracted to these characters? Darth Vader in Star Wars was even a favorite character of mine. Audience are attracted to these characters for the same reason they are attracted to Griffin Mill from The Player and Vito and Michael Corleone from the Godfather. Even though all of these characters have done life long acts of evil, we still look up to them. In the Godfather I looked up to Don Vito Corleone. It is very ironic that he is a cold-blooded murderer, and still he shows many sympathetic characteristics. On a personal level he has strong morals and appears to be a good person. Through the entire movie the outside perspective of what people think of the Corleone family is never shown and the only police that we see are the o
He is rich, he is above the law, and has the power of an important politician. Because a man that doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man" said Don Vito Corleone. We are to just assume the things that Vito does to people; they are never mentioned or seen first hand in the entire movie. He can take revenge on someone without lifting a finger. They have what we want and we love them because of it. So from the viewer's perspective, the Don lives the ultimate life style. For example in the Godfather the audience is nearly sheltered from the evil acts of Don Vito Corleone, we only see his good side. Henry corrupts his wife Karen, sells and snorts cocaine, and betrays his mob family. Henry Hill is not a good person, yet we admire him and feel sympathetic for him. They have urges and desires to be the Don of a criminal empire or be the top executive that everyone admires. We see how he rises up into the Mob world and then we see how he falls down to rock bottom. We want to be rich and be able to have people look up to us. The last character that I would like to talk about is Henry Hill from Goodfellas. Who does not want to be a top executive at a production company? He has hundreds of writers that look up to him so that he will simply give them the time to hear a movie pitch.
