Power of Personal Image

             "Beauty", it's in our face every time we turn on the television set or flip though the pages of magazines. Day after day, hour after hour, minute after minute, our minds are being filled with images of beautiful people. The recent emphasis on fitness, youth, beauty and thinness has caused many women to try harder than ever to attain the current body ideal. Why do women become dissatisfied, self-critical, and judgmental about their bodies? The answers lye in magazine advertisements, television, media content, and fashion. While all of these factors contribute to being beautiful on the outside, it's tearing young women apart on the inside.
             Magazine advertising is a major vehicle for presenting images and forming attitudes. The majority of ads incorporate young, beautiful, slender models to present their products and services. Cosmopolitan, a popular women's magazine, plays a major role in making women feel insecure about their bodies. Supermodel, Claudia Schiffer, graced the cover of cosmopolitan wearing a beautiful, yellow dress by Calvin Klein. Her flawless skin, toned arms, and petite body was thrown in the faces of American women; mocking them. Cosmopolitan not only puts Claudia Schiffer on the cover, but also has a small article about her.
             It's an article to show that there is more than just a pretty face. She is referred to as "one super busy supermodel, restaurant mogul, and soon-to-be movie star." There goes the normal women's theory that the reason why they themselves do not look like a supermodel is because they are too busy. This gives the message that Claudia Schiffer is "super busy" but still has time to spend to make her self look beautiful. As women are consistently exposed to these feminine forms, it becomes difficult to distinguish what is normal.
