Risk, is it Just a Game?
Have you ever been in a risky situation where you get that feeling; it's that feeling in the deep of your stomach, and your stomach feels like it just dropped? Because I have felt it a few times and every time it has happened to me, it has been a good and bad feeling; both at the same time. Risk is a tricky term to just flat out define; I'm not talking about the definition you pull out of any old dictionary, but to really define what risk is to yourself. For me, risk isn't rock climbing, or getting big air on a snowboard, or floating down a level 3 rapid with just a wetsuit and a life jacket on. I feel all of those things are FUN. All three of the things listed I have done, or I do frequently, and in each of those cases none of those things pose a BIG risk to me. Of course there is some risk involved, there is risk involved when you climb a flight of stairs, who knows you might slip, even if you are sure footed. All of the risk's I have used in the sentences above this can be replaced with one word danger. To me controlled danger is fun. Launching off of a big jump gets your adrenaline pumping, and for those few seconds you are in the air, it is like nothing you have ever felt. And when you stomp the landing (stomp is a sno
So the rest of the day I felt great, we went back and we did the cliff 2 more times, I fell once, and I landed a second time. Most of us did a variation of the 20 footer which was somewhere between the high point and the low point of what was essentially a huge boulder shaped piece of land with rich growth on it, and a 10 foot clearing so that we could all have our own bomb holes. Then it was me, and I point my board and then hesitate for a second because I have to go all the way to the left. If you have been waiting to ask that girl out and you finally do, that is a big risk to me, because what if they say no, then you feel like an idiot and you wish you could take it back, but if they say yes then you feel like a million bucks and that nothing can bring you down. We are at the top of Blackcomb Mountain and we are stopped for a moment on the main trail and we are looking into a small tree run. Now I can't wait to go back to Whistler this February and try a cliff bigger, and try the super kickers in the park, you get like 30 feet of air off these things. Jake was the only one who had dropped before, but he hadn't done it in a while, mainly because he didn't have any big interest. At the end of the day I was feeling pretty stoked, I had taken a risk and I had benefited from that risk, mentally and physically. Next Sam goes, and he goes about 2 feet to the left of Nick, stomps it as well. These are all risks, but FUN, ADRENALINE PUMPING RISKS, so the adrenaline tends to block out all of the bells going off in my head that say "Danger! Risk!" But to me there is one use of risk that cannot be replaced with fun or controlled danger.
