Who am I

             In Japan, there is an annual ceremony called the Coming of Age Day. It is held on the second Monday in January, for those becoming 20 years old. The day is a national holiday and some ceremonies take place by local government. Everyone attends ceremonies, dressing up with formal clothes. Some wear traditional Japanese dress for the day. Others wear two-piece suits as if they are working, showing that they are adult. Many people waited for this day because they are officially given rights to drink, smoke, and vote etc. Unfortunately, I could not attend the ceremony. I am legally an adult. However, I am still a college student and am not fully independent from my parents. I am uncertain that people call me an adult and I wonder what an adult is.
             I remember that I thought I could be an adult by the time I went to high school when I was a schoolgirl. Then I realized that it is too early for being an adult. I needed more time so I defined an adult as a person who already graduated from high school and can drive a car. When I was a high school student, I thought that these were not enough. The fact was that I was living with my family and was getting support from them. Even my grandparents treated me as a child. What was their superiority was that they have money. I concluded that being an adult as when I get a job. It seems to cry for the moon.
             According to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, an adult is "one that has arrived at full development esp. in size, strength, or intellectual capacity" and "evidencing maturity." An adult is not likely to grow tall anymore...so I decided to ask the definition of adult to my mother. Her definition of an adult is a person who can take all his or her own responsibility. She recognizes herself as an adult. She is 46 years old and does something related to architecture with my father as her job. She married into my father's family and has raised four of us. Sh...
