Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War

             "I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me," Abraham Lincoln said in a letter to A. G. Hodges, April 4, 1864. Although there have been many American presidents there is one that stands out among the rest. He died doing what he did best. Abraham Lincoln he has been the best president because he led the United States during the American Civil War, helped end slavery, and he was a magnificent leader.
             During one of the hardest times in United States history, Abraham Lincoln led our country in the Civil War. The northerners and the southerners had two different opinions on how the government should be run. Abraham Lincoln was a "peacemaker" between the northerners and southerners. It is thought that the United States could have been split into two of our more nations if Abraham Lincoln was not there to keep the peace. Although he might have been able to keep our country from splitting into two nations he was not able to stop the battles between the northerners and the southerners. The bloodiest battle in U.S. history was the battle of Gettysburg; over 45,000 people were killed in the battle. But luckily he was not one of the deceased in the battle of Gettysburg for if he were, America would have never been graced with Gettysburg address. Abraham Lincoln was such an extraordinary writer that he was able, to sum up the battle of Gettysburg in a two-minute speech that left the audience astounded and speechless as they reflected upon what Lincoln had said.
             Among many of his successes throughout his lifetime, Lincoln was able to help end slavery. He was able to accomplish this using his strong leadership, military intelligence, and powerful speeches such as the Emancipation Proclamation. Although, his goal was not to free the slaves that is something he made a point of doing. " If my name ever goes into history, it will be for this act, and my whole soul is in it," Lincoln said as he discussed...
