Time was now our on our side. With the sun setting and the sky quickly changing to black, we prepared for our journey. It had long been said that the abandoned monastery in Glen Ellyn was haunted and that those who wandered the corroding halls would meet the after life. My friend Liz, who accompanied my best friend Jack and I, had heard from her sister that if you were in the halls late at night you would hear footsteps and screaming. On nights that there was nothing to do, kids older than us would go there and wander around looking for ghosts, and going up to the bell tower which stuck out so highly in the sky, to see the whole city and its lights. So like any curious sixteen year olds we had to experience it for ourselves. Waiting in the car were my friends Rob, Fabo, and Suzie. They were too spooked to go in.
We had another force besides the afterlife working against us that the older kids didn’t, the police. I guess the year before we made our attempt another kid from our city went in and broke his leg. Afraid of more lawsuits, the city had police patrolling the building at all times of day, and they added a fence directly around the building in hopes that it would keep us from entering.
. . .
My heart was pumping at an incredible pace and so were my legs. The closer I got the faster my heart was beating. It then dawned on me that if it was a car coming around the corner of the island of trees, that the driver wouldn’t be able to see us and would probably run us over. It was odd to me, to be able to see that many stars, I was used to the everyday light pollution that kept me from seeing all of them, but the brightest. It didn’t stop going up, and it didn’t even out. I jumped up and started running, Jack followed closely behind, and Liz trailed but was keeping up. Busted!!!
“Can I help you, officer?” Jack exclaimed. Next came the officer who nearly landed directly on Liz. I felt as though I couldn’t just leave her there. By now Liz was standing up, she seemed dazed and a little wobbly.
When I was fifteen feet from the island, I saw the other end of the light come around. She landed flat on her stomach as if she were doing a belly flop. The flaw in the walls design was that it only surrounded the field on three sides. I crashed what must have been fifteen feet down. Finally the light stopped, it blinded my eyes and to this day I can still feel the heat projection off of it.
