Affects of 3rd Party Systems
Before going into the research paper to explain the affects that the creation of the 2 party systems had on 3rd party politics we need to have concise and in-depth comprehension knowledge on the two party systems in America. In the past, American political parties were customarily looked to for jobs and favors by the party followers and contributors. The American political system has been primarily a two party system ever since the Whig party left office in 1852. The Democrats and the Republicans have been the two parties fighting for the Presidency since that time. There have always been many other parties since that time, called, 3rd political parties the introduction to American politics that voices the opinions of others not in favor of the 2 party systems. "Third parties have contributed huge ideas to American politics, from the abolition of slavery, to a woman's right to vote, to child labor laws. Their relatively recent exile to the margins of American political life is highly unfortunate. Elect to office a public servant from every main voting district who will pull debates toward the national level, the best conclusion is that 3rd party politics may someday take over for the interests of the long term survival of the United States. The Reform party is one of the more widely known of these. Third party systems, on the other hand, wish to empower people by encouraging them to vote, and vote according to their conscience, not according to past party affiliations. The American 2 party political system cannot meet the needs of the American people because many people who voice different ideas and opinions are not elected to office. What has developed in our electoral system is more like a one-party system with two faces. If you feel the Democrats and Republicans are doing a good job running our government, then by all means vote for them. Many of the methods of top-down power politics in the Democratic and Republican parties are repugnant to new parties, as well as to most Americans. Yet the government still restricts the incoming new parties, the Republicans and Democrats have the authority to change the laws and basically relegate all third parties so they never reach the political arena. The problem has always been competition for the Republicans and Democrats. Their front man and former presidential candidate is Ralph Nader. Ross Perot founded the Reform Party several years ago. Our democracy was most vital and attracted the largest voter turnout over 100 years ago when there were no laws restricting third party participation in the political process and, as a result, there were several vibrant smaller parties. They also need to fight the two party systems that prevent alternative ideas from being expressed. The voices of the minorities who are not represented by the two major parties are represented thru the use of 3rd party systems.
