People¡¯s insecurity leads them to intimidate others for one reason, which is to feel inferior. When a situation arises with another person, courtesy is presented out of respect, especially in the presence of authority, but not all follow this to the same degree. It is the power of conformity that breaks a person and attracts them into a web of deceit, which is sprung by the deceitful. Rules are made to control others in their actions towards one another. Out of rules, the maker of them has the power to change lives, while the follower of them is used like a pawn in a chess game. It is the power of rules that can instill fear and it is the unknown punishment that can keep that person in line. In The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood, the idea of control over others permeates this novel through the conflict between ego and external reality, the authority over the family, and the tragic effect of a lie.

From the words of the Weasel by Patrick Lane: ¡°Bird life among him sleeps in feathers as he creeps ¡¦ small nose testing every board for opening, a hole small as an eye¡¦ ¡± , Zenia is unmasked as an amoral in Atwood¡¯s novel. She is ¡°The Robber Bride, lurking in her mansion in the dark forest, preying upon the innocent, enticing youths to their doom in her evil caldron. Though she cares deeply for him and organizes his life they have together, by budgeting his nourishments, it does not last long, because of Zenia. It¡¯s a token of her continuation¡± to live through everyone¡¯s life fully. With just a story regarding personal helplessness, Zenia is able to render for herself food and shelter. Zenia, ¡°¡¦has lost, but whatever her secrets are she¡¯s not telling¡± , because she is still spiritually alive. By doing this she thought that she was saving him so she extracted, ¡°heroism and self-sacrifice¡± from herself for the first time in her life for the cause of love. Despite her power to victimize all people that she settles down with, in the end, she becomes exactly how her casualties were, innocent. She will still always live in the minds of others, considering that she was present at her own dispensing to ¡°make herself known.
