Culture Shock
Life is full of mysteries and surprises. No one can predict what is going to happen in his or her life tomorrow. When I first moved to California from Hong Kong at the age of 10, I had no idea what to expect. All I knew back then was that California has good weather, bright sunshine, nice beaches, and people that like to surf. Besides that, I had no idea what it was like to live in California. As the years have passed, I experienced a California that I had little idea existed when I first arrived here. The diversity of the people in California, the energy and intensity people put into sports, and the big issue of drug and alcohol abuse with teenagers shocked me.One of the first things that shocked me when I came to California is its diversity. I had never seen that many races of people before I immigrated here. I th
The next thing I realized was the amount of time and money people spend in sports. I found out that some people choose to drink and take illegal drugs because they want to feel grown up or to fit into a certain group of friends; and some others choose to do it just because of their curiosity. Almost every weekend there are sports events, such as: golf, football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer, etc. But as I began school and got involved in more activities, I found out that there are many different races of people from all over the world who live in the state. In addition, the big issue with teenagers getting involved with alcohol and illegal drugs really did shock me. Another thing that shocked me is the amount of money people are willing to spend in sports. Soon, I realize that I am not the only minority culture and I learned that California is the most diverse state in the United States. After living in California for 7 years, I have changed physically andmentally. For example: when it comes to playoff season in any sports, some people are willing to spend thousands of dollars to get a good seat for the game. I noticed that a lot of students took illegal drugs and have alcohol problems during high school, which I did not expect at all before I came. This is shocking to me because I never expected alcohol and drug use among students to be such a serious problem. They get so into the game that they scream and yell while watching. But the one thing that shocked me is the energy and intensity people put into simply watching sports. I would never imagine some of these things that occur in America. I have increased my knowledge by learning more about other cultures and I have a different point of view in life.
