Genetics

Genetic modification of organisms in general is abiotechnological process that forces genes tobehave according to certain characteristics.Changing characteristics of organisms is based onchanging their DNA (tech deoxyribonucleic acid;the acid which carries genetic information in acell). It is being used for modifying genes in plants, animals or micro-organisms. It is being also usedespecially with food in order to improve thenutritious quality, make less use of chemicals suchas pesticides, which proved to be extremelyharmful, and sometimes to add flavour. Geneticallymodified food (GMF) is considered one of themodern production improvements and the largestfood experiments in the world's history. However,it is very vital to dispel misconception about the

Amain problem is that the issue of labelling theseproducts is not yet widely used. essing whichhas a lot of benefits but at the same time mayarouse problems. That could also be avoided by further researchand continued experiments. Genetic modification of food has won theadmiration of a lot of people, including myself, because of its new and attractiveaccomplishments, but at the same time we shouldtake into consideration its disadvantages and try tofind ways to avoid them. Therefore, harmfulsubstances may appear unexpectedly and canpossibly create viruses and new dangerousdiseases. A common example is, whensome people who are allergic to certain kinds offood such as fish eat genetically modified productssuch as tomatoes which were injected with genessimilar to these fish, they get easily affected byallergens. It has many good aspects, suchas making plants ripen faster, improving thespecie's taste and look, and providing ThirdWorld countries with healthier and cheaper food. In addition to that, there arelong-term effects with reasons not yet identified. Also, GMFs might contain toxins, whichmay negatively affect human beings. Labelling is then one possible choice that couldhelp in avoiding some of the GMFs dangers. "In fact, theprocess of inserting genes is quite random and candamage normal genes " (Genetic Engineered Food- A Serious Health Risk 3). Similarly, GMF producersare obliged to label their products. When genetic engineers insert newgenes into any organism, it can lead to disruptionand unpredictable changes in the pattern andstructure of the new genetic function. People have the right to know if the food they areconsuming is genetically modified whether it is amatter. This of course is a violation of humanrights which can Nagi2 easily be avoided bysimply informing consumers of the characteristicsof the product.
